The heart longs for a little bit of hope
Light of the World, Lauren Daigle
To those of you reading the following words, I put before you the following question to consider:
What is hope?
As I’ll outline, essentially hope is–in its most basic and elemental context–a simple idea to grasp.
Hope is the eternal fire that blazes and burns within each of us, like the Olympic torch of this year’s past 2026 Winter Olympics;
Hope is like a dimmer switch on a light switch, in that the dimmer’s movement can be increased to shine fully and at its brightest;
Hope is the catalyst that causes and propels any kind of effectual, real change;
Hope is the ember in the fire of our heart that causes man to be fully alive, as St. Iraneus once said;
It’s the beacon of light that illuminates our path when, for most of us, the path in front of us is about as dense as the fog off the coast of the Eastern seaboard from our dinghy pushing off from the shore when I was growing up;
Hope is the smile from a girl of romantic interest;
It’s the encouraging word from a good friend;
Its echo is heard from the purity and innocence of his nephews;
Hope exists in fireflies on a long warm midsummers evening (especially in those places that lie well north of the equatorial line);
It’s the reason we do what we are passionate about, or anything—really—at all;
It is fundamentally our existence;
It’s our purpose in life and the expressed reason why any of us mere mortals venture to put on one pant leg at a time upon each waking day;
It’s the desire for love of a potential woman of interest;
It helps us to continue on in the face of the mundane and uninteresting parts of daily life;
Hope is the embrace from a loved one as embodied through the beautiful gift of human touch;
Hope is the longing for eternity set in every heart from long, long ago;
Hope is why I write this…or anything at all;
It’s the wellspring of life contained in cisterns deep within us;
Hope is eternal;
It is the only suitable flame designed to endure and live on;
In two words it is: eternity everlasting;
Ultimately, it’s the eternal longing for another kingdom and entirely new way of life and doing things;
Put simply in our universal Earthen language:
Hope is her (while on the earth)–and,
Hope is Him (who is in Heaven and lives in us).
